NEWARK, NJ, SEPTEMBER 20, 2006 –Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Superintendent Marion A. Bolden will announce a partnership between the City and the Newark Public Schools to promote an anti-litter campaign, Beautiful Newark and its kick-off event “ONE DAY”. The announcement is being made at 1:00 p.m. at University High School, 55 Clinton Place, Newark.

ONE DAY is a citywide community event organized by The League that will take place on Saturday, October 7, 2006, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This volunteer effort is driven by the city’s youth. Last year, close to 1,000 youngsters at 66 school sites participated, and set a city record for community service with The League.

Volunteers participating in Beautiful Newark ONE DAY will be eligible for raffle prizes that include: Gift cards to Newark restaurants, a flat screen TV and a Grand Prize of two (2) tickets on JetBlue. Everyone who volunteers on ONE DAY will be entered into raffle. Raffle drawing will take place at the free-after party in Branch Brook Park (by the Lions – Park Avenue) from 2 p.m. to 4p.m.

With the support of Essex County, Jersey Cares, Newark Now, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newark and a growing number of committed groups, the goal of the ONE DAY community event is to empower, encourage and organize Newark residents to plant yellow flower bulbs and clean up litter around the city. Schools, faith-based organizations, non-profits, block associations and local businesses will be engaged to help change the landscape of the City of Newark.

Mayor Booker has committed his support and encourages the City of Newark to join him in the beautification activities scheduled for ONE DAY. He states, “Newark is our home and we must all do our share to make it safe and keep it beautiful. I ask every resident to come out on October 7th and join us. It is up to us to keep our great city clean.” Mayor Booker applauds the efforts of Superintendent Bolden and her student body for leading the residents. “Because of this joint effort,” expressed the Superintendent “Newark Public Schools and the City are taking a bold stand to let the world know that we want and deserve a clean city, and it starts with our own residents.”
