NEWARK,
NJ, SEPTEMBER 20, 2006 –Newark
Mayor Cory Booker and Superintendent
Marion A. Bolden will announce a partnership
between the City and the Newark Public
Schools to promote an anti-litter
campaign, Beautiful Newark and its
kick-off event
“ONE DAY”.
The announcement is being made at
1:00 p.m. at University High School,
55 Clinton Place, Newark.
ONE DAY is a citywide
community event organized by The
League that will take place on Saturday,
October 7, 2006, from 9 a.m. to
2 p.m. This volunteer effort
is driven by the city’s youth. Last
year, close to 1,000 youngsters
at 66 school sites participated,
and set a city record for community
service with The League.
Volunteers participating in Beautiful
Newark ONE DAY
will be eligible for raffle prizes
that include: Gift cards to Newark
restaurants, a flat screen TV and
a Grand Prize of two (2) tickets
on JetBlue. Everyone who volunteers
on ONE DAY will
be entered into raffle. Raffle drawing
will take place at the free-after
party in Branch Brook Park (by the
Lions – Park Avenue) from 2
p.m. to 4p.m.
With the support of Essex County,
Jersey Cares, Newark Now, the Boys
and Girls Clubs of Newark and a
growing number of committed groups,
the goal of the ONE DAY
community event is to empower, encourage
and organize Newark residents to
plant yellow flower bulbs and clean
up litter around the city. Schools,
faith-based organizations, non-profits,
block associations and local businesses
will be engaged to help change the
landscape of the City of Newark.
Mayor Booker has committed his
support and encourages the City
of Newark to join him in the beautification
activities scheduled for ONE
DAY. He states, “Newark
is our home and we must all do our
share to make it safe and keep it
beautiful. I ask every resident
to come out on October 7th and join
us. It is up to us to keep our great
city clean.” Mayor Booker applauds
the efforts of Superintendent Bolden
and her student body for leading
the residents. “Because of this
joint effort,” expressed the Superintendent
“Newark Public Schools and the City
are taking a bold stand to let the
world know that we want and deserve
a clean city, and it starts with
our own residents.”
